Summary of Asian Science Camp 2009

The delegation in Hong Kong consists of 10 students. 5 students are from secondary schools and the rest are from universities. We arrived Tsukuba, where the particle accelerator of Tokyo University is located, on Sunday 2 August. The Camp starts on 3 August and ends on 8 August (Saturday).

There were lectures and parallel discussion sessions in the Camp. The third day of camp was an excursion. Students gave poster presentation on Friday and the result released on Saturday. The Emperor and Empress of Japan arrived and chat with students on Friday night after their presentation. One student from Hong Kong had the opportunity to speak to the Empress, but I couldn't take photos in the presence of Emperor and Empress.

Prizes were given after the presentation. One group was awarded gold medal award, two groups silver award, three groups bronze award, and roughly 10 groups of selection committee award. Chu Chun Kit (HKU Chemistry) and his team members got a selection committee award. Chong Chi Chiu (Assembly of God Hebron Secondary School) and his team members got a silver medal award.

The topic of gold medal award was an application of nuclear physics in medical use. They proposed to use the energy created in the annihilation process of matter and anti-matter to kill cancer cells. I am not sure whether it is feasible but we all think it is an innovative idea.

The delegation from Thailand was particularly active in the camp. Nearly half of the questions raised from the floor were from them. They had serious interviews and also a 3-day selection camp before forming the delegation.

In the next year the camp will be held in Mumbai, India.
